When manual inspection was no longer sufficient in a high-capacity heavy plate production line, a global steel company turned to Consat Engineering. Together, they implemented an automated vision system that enables full inline inspection of large steel plates at production speed.
The solution supports consistent quality, reduces claims and ensures compliance with increasingly strict customer requirements. Today, the system is production-critical for several product categories and forms a key part of the customer’s quality strategy.

The challenge
Manual inspection of large steel plates was subjective and difficult to scale. Small surface defects were hard to detect at high speed, while customer and industry requirements for documented, automated inspection continued to increase.
The solution
Consat implemented the automated vision system Optonova integrated directly into the production line. The system inspects the entire surface in real time, classifies each plate according to defined quality criteria and stores image data for traceability and analysis.
The result
The customer has reduced claims while meeting significantly higher quality requirements. For certain products, automated surface inspection is now essential for production to be possible at all.
Beyond secured quality, the solution has created a data foundation enabling traceability, process improvement and long-term quality development.
